Crown plans are referenced by what are referred to as big and small numbers. The big number refers to the plan number is a series.
The small number refers to the series of plans, usually based on the parish or type of plan.
A plan with big number 296 and small number 3090 will have crown plan number 296-3090. This is the format used when searching.
These numbers can be found on parish maps or in title documents but there are a few ways in which they can be written.
Usually they are written on the portion on a parish map, with the big number written first and in bigger text than the small.
Sometimes, just the big number is written and so you'll need to work out the small number.
Usually the parish map will also have a table listing out the big numbers for each lot.
They may include the small number or have text at the top or bottom of the table to indicate what the small number will be if not otherwise listed.
If you can't find the small number, you can just enter the big number in the search and supply a county or parish. All matches will then be returned and you can try find the relevant plan that way.
There also exists what are referred to as 'Miscellaneous' plans or Ms. for short. These plans often use an abbreviation relating to the Lands Board District instead of a small number.
An example would be Ms. 296 Oe, which corresponds to plan 296-3090.
In the search box, you can enter a Crown Plan Number or a big number and miscellaneous (Ms.) reference code. Below are the codes, full names, and numbers:
